O WHOM? O WHAT? PROVE IT!
The Late George Carlin said many times, “I do not believe anything that our government says about anything, ever!”
While I would not wish to diminish the laudable efforts of an American team of heroes who may have, indeed, accomplished the great coup of killing Osama Bin Laden, I am not yet sold.
Two misgivings trouble me.
Foremost, show me the body.
Don’t ask me to believe the coincidence that, on the very anniversary of Hitler’s death, Osama Bin Laden was miraculously found, killed, and “buried at sea” all before Fox News could show the resulting celebrations around the country. Sure, White House chatter teases that photos may soon be made public. In this age, many of us know how to use Photoshop. I can’t imagine the tricks that could be perpetrated with a stealth version the Pentagon might possess.
The Office of the President's refusal this week to display any photos at all appears even more cagey. Inflammatory? OK; but there's nothing like a head on a stick to prove you've taken somebody out. We all need that proof.
Secondly, the United States Government has never been considered fully forthright in matters like these over my lifetime. As far as openness and honesty are concerned, our leadership seldom qualifies for a high mark, even if we’re grading on a curve. The White House and its Oval Office historically have shown themselves to be untrustworthy with information this big. Believability and integrity have never been Washington strong suits.
Had CNN and comparable worldwide news services proudly shown the US Carrier’s flight deck, possibly with a wood-chipper perched over the edge and respectful towel-headed mosque members officiating “last rites” to a body we could see, then maybe I could believe. Maybe.
Too, just this past week, magnifying glasses have popped out to look more closely at a strategically produced “Long Form Birth Certificate” reportedly belonging to our President. Is our attention being purposely, forcefully drawn away from that issue by a bigger, more astounding story?
Alas, I find the timing of the "death" of Bin Laden too odd.
The hurrah of breaking into Sunday Night’s prime time to announce that news seemed over-dramatic.
The lack of a “Mission Accomplished” banner draped over a body with a face we could recognize is too unlike our beloved government. The shortage of showmanship itself is suspect.
Washington spins like a dizzy prom queen. Its waft of deceit is legendary.
I can’t help it. I think I smell a ruse.
